San Francisco Decorator Showcase 2013: Catherine Kwong

This years San Francisco Decorator Showcase is a beautiful mix of old and new with an emphasis on a unique set of juxtaposed details thanks to Catherine Kwong and the other talented designers.   Catherine designed the Living area of this amazing home and I love this space just as much as I loved her own beautiful home!

Catherine Kwong designs a decadent
rock 'n roll hideaway for the 2013 San Francisco Decorator Showcase.
With custom furnishings and an emphasis on luxe materials, Catherine
Kwong brings her signature elegance and modern point of view to create
a grand living room.
“The design was inspired by Mick and Bianca Jagger in the 1970’s - the
young and wild, traipsing-to-Saint Tropez years,” said Catherine Kwong.
“I was doing research for a client and discovered all of these beautiful old
photos of Mick and Bianca that depicted a wild romance. They were
impossibly stylish and full of excitement, with a bit of scandal, of course.
So I designed this room for them; a place for late-night parties with rock
royalty and the jet-set. I wanted the room to be just like Mick and Bianca:
luxe and decadent, but with a rock 'n roll edge.”
The star of the room is the dramatic painted floor, which serves as a rich
canvas for the room’s artful mix of luxurious textures, details and lines.
Inspired by the iconic paintings of Cy Twombly, the floor was
hand-painted in exuberant brushstrokes by decorative painting firm,
Stancil Studios.

Deep red walls and a rich charcoal velvet sofa give this glamorous living room edge while patterned cushions and botanical charts add highlights.

American-style living room

Striped wallpaper, blinds and cushions give this neutral living room an American-style, nautical feel.

Living room with mismatched patterns

An all-white room lends itself well to mixing patterns and prints. Here, a floral armchair, textured pouffe and detailed lampshade, all with a retro vibe, marry beautifully to create interest against the white surroundings.

Neutral country living room

Dress a neutral sofa with a textured throw and cushions in leaf patterns, checks and silhouette designs. Complement with a slate-topped table for hot drinks around a roaring living room fire.

Classic country living room

Cream, white and soft red furnishings along with lush green foliage give this living room a country feel. A delicate rose-print cushion cover echoes the delightful floral displays.

An earthy-toned carpet, teamed with a comfortable plaid wing chair and leather chesterfield sofa, creates a quintessentially country look.

Wood-burning stove

A woodburning stove, set within a large fireplace, is the focus point of this living room. The walls and floors are kept neutral to complement the black sofa and warm red rug.

Country living room with open fire

A colour palette of blues, greys and limed wood contrasts with the exposed beams and stone fireplace. A large open fire creates a stunning focal point, adding warmth to this sophisticated scheme.

Country living room design

The gold and charcoal tones of the roman blind tie in with the warm tones of the dark wood furniture. The navy upholstered sofa echoes the blue slate floor in the kitchen to create an overall balance.

Small living room

This small living room features a large mirror, giving the illusion of more space. The candy-striped sofa compliments the 18th century vintage style.

Panelled living room

This room is totally on trend. The single drops of wallpaper look like stencilled motifs as the surrounding area in the alcoves are painted in the paper's background colour. The colour is repeated in the room's accessories to complete the scheme

Country living room

A stone Sofa Workshop sofa and cream walls set off curtains, cushions and throws in rich red, gold, blue and pink. An antique painted armoire is a focal point by a window, an oak side table by a beam creates balance. A Cargo HomeShop coffee table on a Marston & Langinger textured rug creates contrast.

Berry accents living room

Team a traditional floral pattern with bold berry tones for an elegant update on a classic look. Start by picking the fabric and use it on the curtains, cushions and a footstool, then bring in neutral tones on the furniture and flooring for an elegant finish.
